Ogden, Utah, November 2009 Ladies, As I said in the last Newsletter, our last seminar was a great success in several ways. For example, we were fortunate to make a “profit” on this one, and so we are able to make up for some of our losses on the last 2 seminars. I have been told that while Terry and I were in ‘sunny California’, y’all had a good paint-in with Eileen. I know she is a good teacher, and I would have liked the project very much. If some of you would send me a picture of yours, I would appreciate it. Nancy’s gourd class is 14 November, and this should be a fun and new type of project. As you know, we have elections once a year for the Chapter Board. We must do this because, although, a member may hold a specific position for two consecutive years, they must run for the second term along with anyone else interested in the position. Also the Vice President does not automatically become President. She must run for that position just as anyone else. Please keep this in mind when Rosina contacts you about being nominated for a Board position. If elected, you will find this a very enjoyable experience. Also, if you are interested in a position, don’t wait for Rosina to call you; call her (801-334-6217). Those intending to come to our Christmas party (12 Dec, 1pm) may send CarolAnn your check for $14.00 if you will not be at our November paint-in. Her address is 1037 W 4600 S, Riverdale 84405. The menu sounds scrumptious and is being catered by a professional chef LeeAnn Gossett (yes, she is Lydia’s daughter). We will be having prime rib au jus, mashed potatoes, green pear salad and cheese cake. The drinks will include a special punch. Although LeeAnn and Lydia have planned some fun games so that everyone will go home a winner, there will also be other gifts and prizes. Glenda has been saving all the “loser” raffle tickets throughout the year and will be drawing from these for some very nice gifts. One of these gifts is a free day at next year’s spring seminar. And, of course, the Chapter will be presenting gifts. YOU MUST BE PRESENT TO WIN any of these. We still need memory boxes. Bereaving parents need something tangible to carry out of the hospital. This is one way to let them know someone else is aware of their lost one. See you soon. Rebecca |

Gourd Preperation
Cleaning the Outside of the Gourd: Your uncleaned gourd will most likely be dirty and
moldy. This is normal for gourds after they have dried out. The mold creates beautiful
patterns in the gourd surface. It is best to clean your gourds outdoors but some people
use the kitchen sink or bathtub. If you have a sensitive respiratory system, you may want
to wear a mask or respirator while cleaning.
Soak: Fill a large tub or your sink with warm water, and a bit of dish soap. Some people
use a little bleach also, although many people do not and report that dish soap works just
fine. If you do use bleach, read your label on your dish soap to make sure that it’s safe
to use with bleach. Add gourds then lay towel over top, wet it down good and let them sit
for an our or so, pouring the soapy water over the towel occasionally to keep the gourds wet.
Scrub: The scrubbing tools that you use depend on the stubbornness of the dried skin and
mold that the particular gourd has. One good method is to soak, scrape with a credit card,
and clean up the rest with a Magic Eraser. If your gourd has a white dried coating, these
can be particularly hard to clean. Lots of soaking and a scraper such as a dull kitchen knife,
credit card, or paint scraper will usually take care of this.
Dry: It is very important to allow the gourd to dry completely before beginning a project.
Cleaning the Inside of the Gourd: It is very important that you wear a mask or respirator for
these steps because the moldy interior of a gourd can be harmful to breathe.
Mark: Draw a line where you want to cut the gourd opening. If you want to make a bowl, you
can use embroidery rings to trace a circle or drawing templates. One method to draw a ring
is to set the gourd on a table and prop a pencil on a mug or other object that will hit the
gourd at the right height to make a ring. Then move the gourd in a circle, keeping it even
until reaching the starting point.
Starter Hole: To start your hole, you can use an Xacto knife or a small drill to make a hole
on the line. If you are using the top as a lid, it’s better to start with the Xacto so that you
don’t create any large gaps.
Cut: The tool that you use to cut the gourd may depend on the thickness of the gourd. For very
thin gourds, an Xacto knife or Versi-tool with a knife attachment work well as does a mini jigsaw.
With very thick gourds, you may need to use a jigsaw as many thicker gourds will break blades on
a mini jigsaw or gourd saw.
Scrape: Once you open the gourd, save the seeds for planting after the first frost! Remove the
seeds and inner membrane of the gourd. Use your scraping tool to remove the material from the
gourd. Some people leave the gourd like this, getting it as smooth as possible. Other people
hand sand or use a wire brush attached to a drill or Dremel to get the inside very smooth.

well) on each end.

Many of you asked for CarolAnn's receipt for sandwiches we had at
Bobbie's seminar in September; so here it is.
from CarolAnn Smith
4 cans chicken, drained
1-2 cups seedless grapes, sliced
1 pkg almonds, sliced
1 cup Miracle Whip
1 cup Lemon Yogurt
a dab yellow mustard
1/8 tsp garlic powder
Combine drained chicken, salad dressing, yogut, mustard, and garlic. Stir until all
ingredients are completely mixed. Add almonds, stir until mixed. Gently fold in
grapes. Refrigerate until ready to serve on sliced croissant rolls. Makes approximately
10 rolls.
CarolAnn says she bought a large package of almonds then sliced them with a food
processor. She sliced the grapes the same way.

CarolAnn will be going in for surgery on her shoulder the 12th of November. We wish
her a speedy recovery.
Pat says she may be going in for surgery on her hand in a month. We will keep you posted.
