Ogden, Utah, September 2009

Ladies,

*'IT'* has finally arrived - Bobbie Takashima’s seminar. Nancy Coley and Tirzah Probasco, this seminar’s chairladies, have worked diligently with the Board to make this a special time. All who are participating should have your surface, the pattern and preparation instructions. This is going to be fun! I hope to see all of you there.

Don’t forget our Appreciation Tea this month at Mickey Hutchinson’s home – the Board had an example and, believe me when I say, you will be sorry if you don’t come.

The dimensions for Eileen Barnard’s Three Wisemen paint-in are posted below. She has been diligently reviewing the project so it should be another good learning experience for us all.

The November paint-in will be gourd painting and finishing (see below) by Nancy Coley. Be sure to buy your gourd now before they are all gone. If you find a good place to get these, please let me know so I can share the information with the rest of the Chapter. I suggest that you not wait till the last minute as the gourd itself requires a bit of preparation.

An early heads up -- This year’s Christmas party will be held Saturday, December 12th. We will be having a ‘white elephant’ exchange in lieu of the usual ornament exchange. Lydia Gossett, the chairlady, has already been working on the party for us. Please plan to come.

Our paint-in teachers and our chairladies put a lot of planning and effort into our Chapter activities. Please support them and our Chapter by attending as many activities as possible.

See you soon,

Rebecca

PS. Don’t forget memory boxes and occasional raffle items.

September Bobbie Takashima Seminar

Bobbie says that a love of art has been a part of her since early childhood when she tagged along with her mother to paint classes. She had her first formal class in 1960 and has studied with many decorative artists since. She opened Country Keepsakes Folk Art Studio in 1985 where she and nationally recognized teachers conduct seminars and classes. Bobbie has authored several painting books, numerous magazine articles and more than a hundred pattern packets. When not travel teaching, she can be found at conventions or her studio in California.

Gourd Preperation

Cleaning the Outside of the Gourd: Your uncleaned gourd will most likely be dirty and moldy. This is normal for gourds after they have dried out. The mold creates beautiful patterns in the gourd surface. It is best to clean your gourds outdoors but some people use the kitchen sink or bathtub. If you have a sensitive respiratory system, you may want to wear a mask or respirator while cleaning.

Soak: Fill a large tub or your sink with warm water, and a bit of dish soap. Some people use a little bleach also, although many people do not and report that dish soap works just fine. If you do use bleach, read your label on your dish soap to make sure that it’s safe to use with bleach. Add gourds then lay towel over top, wet it down good and let them sit for an our or so, pouring the soapy water over the towel occasionally to keep the gourds wet.

Scrub: The scrubbing tools that you use depend on the stubbornness of the dried skin and mold that the particular gourd has. One good method is to soak, scrape with a credit card, and clean up the rest with a Magic Eraser. If your gourd has a white dried coating, these can be particularly hard to clean. Lots of soaking and a scraper such as a dull kitchen knife, credit card, or paint scraper will usually take care of this.

Dry: It is very important to allow the gourd to dry completely before beginning a project.

Cleaning the Inside of the Gourd: It is very important that you wear a mask or respirator for these steps because the moldy interior of a gourd can be harmful to breathe.

Mark: Draw a line where you want to cut the gourd opening. If you want to make a bowl, you can use embroidery rings to trace a circle or drawing templates. One method to draw a ring is to set the gourd on a table and prop a pencil on a mug or other object that will hit the gourd at the right height to make a ring. Then move the gourd in a circle, keeping it even until reaching the starting point.

Starter Hole: To start your hole, you can use an Xacto knife or a small drill to make a hole on the line. If you are using the top as a lid, it’s better to start with the Xacto so that you don’t create any large gaps.

Cut: The tool that you use to cut the gourd may depend on the thickness of the gourd. For very thin gourds, an Xacto knife or Versi-tool with a knife attachment work well as does a mini jigsaw. With very thick gourds, you may need to use a jigsaw as many thicker gourds will break blades on a mini jigsaw or gourd saw.

Scrape: Once you open the gourd, save the seeds for planting after the first frost! Remove the seeds and inner membrane of the gourd. Use your scraping tool to remove the material from the gourd. Some people leave the gourd like this, getting it as smooth as possible. Other people hand sand or use a wire brush attached to a drill or Dremel to get the inside very smooth.

Chapter Minutes

August 8th 2009

Attending:

     President - Rebecca Chaffee
1st Vice President - Glenda Mitchell
     Treasurer - CarolAnn Smith
     Web/Newletter - Terry Pulver

     Gloria Eldridge
     Lydia Gossett

Terry called the meeting to order (Rebecca was tied up at the moment with the Westwood Village Yard Sale that was going on outside) at 9:55 and welcomed everyone to the August Paint-in.

Several people who were to come had last minute problems, so the group was small today. Glenda stopped by for a few minutes to get her instructions and CarolAnn also came for a short time. Helen was unable to make it from Layton.

Because we were so small a group, we decided to save the raffles for the next paint-in.

JoLynn was thanked for comming from SLC for so small a group, but she said she did not mind. "Even one or two people are reason enough to come and paint". Time was turned over to JoLynn for the "Brush Box" class.
