Ogden, Utah, August 2009 Ladies, Are you getting as excited as I am? Only one month till Bobbie Takashima’s seminar. I hope to see all of you there. We will have a survey for everyone to fill out during the seminar. We would like to know what teachers, what types of work, and what days you would like next year for our paint-ins and seminars. Please be thinking about this so you can tell us your preferences. This month is our brush box paint-in with JoLynn Johnson. This should be another fun class. Our Chapter will once again be taking part in Brigham City’s Peach Days. We will be displaying work done by the members of our Chapter; so choose one or two pieces to show. If you will not be able to get up to Brigham City, you can give your piece to one of the Board members. Peach Days usually occur the first part of September but we do not have the exact date yet. Watch our Newsletter for dates. We still need a lot of memory boxes. Remember you are doing this for families of newborns who pass away so they do not leave the hospital without any acknowledgement of their babe’s life. They need your help. Our rescheduled Appreciation Tea will be held in the English garden of Mickey’s home on September 26th at 4:00pm. Please RSVP by September 20th. Just a reminder to occasionally bring an item for our raffles. It doesn’t need to be expensive; just something you would enjoy getting. Keep safe and cool the remainder of this summer and I hope to see you all soon. Rebecca |

Bobbie says that a love of art has been a part of her since early childhood when she tagged
along with her mother to paint classes. She had her first formal class in 1960 and has studied
with many decorative artists since. She opened Country Keepsakes Folk Art Studio in 1985 where
she and nationally recognized teachers conduct seminars and classes. Bobbie has authored several
painting books, numerous magazine articles and more than a hundred pattern packets. When not
travel teaching, she can be found at conventions or her studio in California.

In 1947, the American people loaded a Frienship Train with food, fuel, medicine and
clothing and sent it to the people of France and Italy. In 1949, the people of
France sent a train to America to say "Merci". Utah's "Merci" Boxcar was placed in
Salt Lake City's Memory Grove, where it was forgotten. In 2002, the local American
Legion brought the boxcar to Ogden and began restoring it. At least 5,000 hours
and nearly $4,000 have gone into the restoration. Originally the boxcar was
decorated with 40 plaques representing the provinces of France that donated gifts.
Over time most had been lost or stolen. Avan Probasco, in addition to aiding in the
restoration work on the boxcar, re-cut new plaques from the old pattern and our own
Tirzah Probasco recreated the 40 plaques that once again adorn the boxcar.
The "Merci" Boxcar was placed in front of Union Station in 2006 and the area was
landscaped and lighted. There will be American and French flags, as well as
an information plaque. Saturday, July 11, 2009, Utah's restored "Merci" Boxcar
was rededicated at Ogden's Union Station, where it will remain on permanent
display.

Marla Caywood , a long time member of our Chapter, lost her husband to illness

I'm sure you join us in sending her our condolences.

Rebecca called the meeting to order at 10:05 and welcomed everyone to the July Paint-in.
The sign up sheets for August and September are on the front table. Patterns for Eileen's class
in October and Nancy's in November are still pending. Becky also asked for feed back in the
class pictures from this month (photo vs computer print-out).
Glenda thanked Lydia and Eileen for raffle items and reminded us that she still needs more
items for the paint-ins.
Becky urged us to paint Memory Boxes. Glenda reported that it is possible that the Shriners
Hospital in SLC may be closed, so for now members should not paint any Treasure Boxes.
Time was then turned over to Julie Mcfadden for the "God Bless Ye Merry Gentlemen" class.
