Ogden, Utah, January 2009

Hello Painters,

Thank you all for your vote of confidence in electing me as Chapter President for this New Year, although I suspect you are mostly grateful you weren't called. However, I am going to ask for your help to make this year as fun as possible.

You can help me and the other Board Members not only by your attendance at our activities but also by sharing with us your ideas and suggestions for projects and/or activities. You can also help by assisting us when we ask for your help; this gives all of us the advantages of getting to know one another better and of a shared load being lighter.

So far this year, Nancy Coley, our Past President, has volunteered to be the Spring Seminar Chairlady. The "Apples on the Vine" (who da thought they would be on a vine) and the "Bramble Bunny" projects should be exciting. If you haven't already signed up for this Seminar, please contact Nancy ASAP. If you have a basket for which you need a lid, contact Tirzah Probasco ASAP.

Carol Wilson will be teaching the January paint-in which is a "Happy Birthday" music box, but it seems that just recently someone has copyrighted the "Happy Birthday" song; so the music boxes will play other songs. Still it is a cute pattern and should be a fun class. Also, due to a schedule conflict at the Roy Senior Center, the paint-in will be held at the Westwood Village Club House.

Several of our members have had surgeries this last year and we are happy to say all are doing quite well. I pray all those having surgeries in 2009 will do as well; I miss each of you when you are not at our activities.

I want to add my "thank you" to Nancy's for the hard work each of you has done over the past years and, especially, the Board Members. It has been a chore at times but also fun.

Happy New Year to you all.

Rebecca/Becky/Reb

March Ronnie Bringle Seminar

Ronnie Bringle's love with Decorative Painting began nearly 40 year ago when she visited a friend and saw her work. When she moved to Washington and could no longer find a teacher, she decided she would teach. Ronnie spent most of her early years trying to keep ahead of her students. She switched from painting in oils to acrylics in 1985 and while she says she still misses oils, she feels more confident with acrylics because of the time she has spent practicing with them. Ronnie has taught in everything from college extension classes to craft shops, SDP and other conventions, and her home studio. She has been teaching seminars throughout the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand for the last 17 years. She labels her style of painting as "Ameri-Country". And says her favorite part of painting is teaching.

Memory Box and Treasure Box Programs

The Memory Box and Treasure Box programs are our community projects for the year, so we need boxes from our members to support these worthwhile projects.

    Memory Box Program

The Memory Box Program, begun in June of 1998 as an all volunteer effort to provide boxes for families of infants that pass away in the hospital so that the families did not leave the hospital empty handed without any representation of that child's life.
The purpose of the program is to affirm that life for the family. Each box is created with great love and a sincere wish to reach out in support and understanding. As artists, we hope the boxes bring each family comfort and the knowledge that many people understand. We know each infant is special and very, very loved, regardless of how long the child lived.
Boxes sent are as varied as the astists that create them. What is impotant s that the boxes are created " from the heart" . Our " rule of thumb"  is that if the box would make you happy if you were to receive it, then it is a good box. Everyone at any skill level is welcome to participate in the program. There is always a need for more boxes!
Our Boxes will go to Ogden Regional Hospital. If you would like more information on the history of the memory box project or you would like to see some pictures of the boxes submitted by other chapters visit the web site at www.teraleigh.com/memoryboxes/

    Treasure Box Program

Jan Mc Craw, known by most as Ladybug, is the founder of the "Treasure Box " Program for sick children.
Having been a nurse, Jan says she remembers all too well how much it meant to terminally ill and long term case children in hospitals, to be given some little extra TLC (tender loving care). So the idea was born to paint a box for a child to have for their very own to hold keepsakes at their bedside. In checking out the resources on traditional treasure boxes used for the past century by kids, she discovered it had been a shoe box. As it turns out, it is the perfect shape to fit into a hospital nightstand. They can be painted up the same as any paper mache box. After painting every shoe box she could find, she did have to purchase some keepsakes boxes at a craft store, which are the same shape and size (11" X 7" and 4" deep).
Jan has made it her goal since 2006 to paint as many Treasure Boxes as she can and to try to get others involved into making this a legacy that can benefit the sick children around the world.
There is no profit made from this program, it is entirely based on volunteers who paint and create the boxes, submit designs, supplies or whatever is required to make the program work. All of the work or money that goes into this program, is completely voluntary or donated. Anything stated to the contrary is false and will be construed to be an attempt to disrupt the true aim of the program. It is meant only to offer some TLC and to put a smile on a sick child's face.
If you would like more information on the treasure box project visit the Ladybug's web site at www.ladybugcreations.com/tbprogram/

Nancy Coley welcomed everyone and introduced our visitor LeeAnn. She thanked everyone for their help throughout the year and especially, at this time, CarolAnn Smith who was the Christmas Party Chairwoman. Then she announced the Board Members for 2009.

She reminded people of our special Christmas raffle, i.e. Nancy Baur’s quail, as well as the regular raffles.

Nancy also reminded everyone who wanted to attend to sign up for the Ronnie Bringle Seminar to be held on 10th and 11th of March. Deadline for signing up with partial payment is December 10th.

The time was then turned over to the Christmas Chairwoman CarolAnn. The delicious buffet dinner of salad, chicken cordon blue, potatoes, green beans and a desert was catered by Sandy's. A refreshing punch was prepared by Eileen Barnard.

Each member received a snowman and Christmas stocking.

Several games were played after dinner. First was 'find-the-hidden-words', followed by a "play money" auction and last, but not least, the hat game. Winners all received gifts.

The regular raffles were then drawn and then the special raffle of the Nancy Baur quail, which was won by Lydia Gossett.

Next was the ornament exchange which ended with a right/left story/exchange.

After the ornament exchange, Nancy gave everyone a gift from the Chapter. She also presented awards to Glenda Mitchell, Tirzah Probasco, and Terry Pulver for special service to the Chapter.

Tirzah then presented Nancy with the Chapter’s President’s gift, i.e. a signed book of James Christiansen’s art work.

Nancy gave each Board member their charm for the pins. She also gave each Board member a thank-you gift and note from herself.

Meeting was adjourned until 10:00am on 10 January 2009, at the Westwood Village Clubhouse. The planned paint-in is for a music box with Carol Wilson as teacher.

Minutes submitted by Rebecca Chaffee, Acting Secretary.
